A construction contract was signed on Tuesday, 21 July and plans reviewed for a refurbished Cayman Brac Police Station.
Representatives from the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs, RCIPS and the PWD were on hand for the Brac site visit, as was Elie Kozaily, owner of KM Limited, the firm awarded the construction project.
Located in Creek, the police station was severely damaged by Hurricane Paloma last November. Construction costs are estimated at some $250,000, with funds coming from government’s insurance claim and National Recovery Fund assistance.
The renovated 1,650 square foot facility will accommodate officers and administrative staff and will also contain two cells. It will be equipped with hurricane-resistant features, including shutters and impact glass. The work should be completed within six to eight weeks.
Planning approval to begin construction is expected next week, but meanwhile, preparatory work has already started.
Persons attending the site visit included Assistant Deputy Chief Secretary (Uniformed Division) Eric Bush, Commissioner of Police David Baines, and PWD architect Colin Lumsden and Quantity Surveyor Evans Simiyu.
While at the site, officials discussed related issues such as security and prisoner movement, as well as human rights concerns. They noted that the Brac station provides holding cells only, which are not intended for long-term use.
“This will be a huge improvement over the previous facility, and we were happy to be included in the design process,” said Officer-in-Charge for Cayman Brac, Chief Inspector Malcolm Kay. He added that the island’s police officers will continue to use the Brac’s UCCI premises, until the end of this quarter.
