A meeting of the National Hazard Management Council (NHMC) was called this afternoon (Tuesday, 4 May) in response to ‘Hurricane Dan’ – the subject of this year’s hurricane preparedness exercise.
Senior officials, including Deputy Governor and NHMC Chairman Donovan Ebanks, as well as representatives of HMCI and other essential services, attended this initial meeting for the two-day simulation.
Under the 2010 scenario, ‘Hurricane Dan’ has entered the Caribbean Sea and is a possible threat to the Cayman Islands. The ‘storm’ scenario will continue through the night and into tomorrow.
Today’s meeting of the Council’s sub-committee chairpersons will be followed tomorrow by an activation of the NEOC featuring a tabletop exercise designed to test readiness plans. The morning will also see the shuttering of government buildings and the testing of generators.
The hurricane season officially begins on 1 June, and lasts for six months.
