The Under-17 National Women’s Basketball team is off to Florida to prepare for regional championships in Puerto Rico.

Cayman’s Under-17 Women’s National Basketball Team left for Florida on Wednesday (6 July), to participate in warm-up matches ahead of the 13-17 July Under-17 Centro Basket Championships in Puerto Rico.

Squad members are Imani Abdul-Jabbar, Felicia Connor, April Ebanks, Ashley Ebanks, Rochel Gardener, Tracey Hydes, Andrea Jackson, Sashaneil McField, Latorae Nixon, Chloe Powery, Kimberly McLean, and Amber Watson.

They are accompanied by Head Coach Redver Ebanks, Assistant Coach Henry Fenton-Tom, Second Assistant Coach Cara Anderson, Manager Holly Ann Chollette-Anderson, Chaperone Marcia Connor, and Cayman Islands Basketball Association Technical Director Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro.

During the championship meet, Cayman will face teams from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and host country, Puerto Rico. The players return on 19 July.

The team was formed and prepared by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association through the support of a grant from Olympic Solidarity. This is the first time that a team from the Cayman Islands has been selected to compete in a championship at this level.
