A Summer Well Spent

Thanks to a group effort, this year’s government summer camps were once again successful.

By sponsoring no less than fifteen summer camps this past summer, the Ministry of Sports has once again put its money where its mouth is.

That meant that over 1,300 children on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac received free coaching in netball, cricket, football, athletics, swimming and basketball camps.

“My ministry’s summer camp initiative remains one of our key programmes and every year we try to expand it. The benefits are numerous, especially providing students with constructive activities and giving parents the peace of mind of knowing that their children are both safe and active,” said Minister of Sports, the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP.

Although sponsored by the Sports Ministry and implemented by the Department of Sports, the programme is a combined effort between the public and private sectors.

“I sincerely thank all the local private sector sponsors and volunteers who enable us to run this programme annually,” Minister Scotland said.

Acting Director of Sports Collin Anglin echoed this view, stating: “The summer camp programme was a great success. It taught students new skills, advanced existing ones, created new friendships and improved our young people’s health”.

“Furthermore, every year we are blessed by having many volunteer coaches and sponsors stepping up to the plate. Herein lies one of the best things about our camps: They bring the community together in taking care of our students through the summer,” Mr. Anglin concluded.
