Cayman’s second annual Constitution Week celebration kicks off on Constitution Day, Monday, 4 July, also a public holiday.
Under the theme Embracing our Constitution, the week will include informative media appearances and a Government House reception for persons with direct involvement in implementing Cayman Islands Constitution provisions.
His Excellency the Governor Duncan Taylor, CBE, is himself directly involved in such implementation, for he chairs both the National Security Council, and the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Other agencies are The Constitutional Commission (chaired by Pastor Al Ebanks); The Commission for Standards in Public Life (Mrs. Karin Thompson); The Human Rights Commission (Mr. Richard Coles); and the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (Mr. Dan Scott).
On 4 July 1959, Cayman’s constitution was established through a Royal Order-in-Council, after the United Kingdom was petitioned by Caymanian Vestrymen. That document was revised in 1972, and following the first national referendum (a new provision) a modernized version was accepted just two years ago, on 10 June 2009.
