Mr. Taylor in the lookout tower.

The readiness of the Cayman Islands Fire Service and of the Hazard Managment Cayman Islands (HMCI) command centre were on display for new Governor Mr. Duncan J. R. Taylor, CBE, who recently toured both offices.

The Governor was told that the well-equipped service responds to over 700 calls each year. In addition, international standards and requirements are maintained at the Owen Roberts and Gerrard Smith international airports.

Chief Fire Officer Dennon Bodden provided the Governor with an overview of the Fire Service, which currently has 133 staff. Officers also outlined the domestic fire-fighting and aerodrome sections, and mentioning other services such as building-inspection and fire-prevention.

Governor Taylor also visited the adjacent HMCI command centre, where he was briefed by Director McCleary Frederick on Cayman’s earthquake-monitoring and hurricane-response systems.

High-tech tools were inspected and Mr. Frederick detailed procedures followed whenever the country goes into emergency response mode.
