Local patron, His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Stuart Jack, CVO, (front row, fourth from left) with Duke of Edinburgh awardees and local executive committee head Mrs. Katherine Jackson (front row, sixth from left).

“This is really a valuable programme to develop young people’s character,” His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Stuart Jack, CVO, said, hosting the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh awards.

At the function last month at Government House, 27 youth and young adults aged 14-25 received silver and bronze awards for successfully participating in the programme. This brings the total number of awardees this year to 89, with 62 receiving silvers and bronzes from the international programme’s patron, HRH the Duke of Wessex in February.

Mr. Jack encouraged more young persons to join the scheme which is designed by HRH Prince Philip to “challenge young people everywhere” (the programme’s motto).

“The returns are they develop skills, self confidence and the ability to work with people, all beneficial for their future,” the Governor noted.

In Cayman for over 30 years, the programme offers bronze, silver and gold levels with four sections available within each level: service, skills, physical recreation and expedition. Currently, there are 13 groups taking part from government and private schools, Scouts, Girls Brigade and the Cadet Corps.
