This week GIS Spotlight visits the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS)’s employment workshop where job seekers were counselled on the secrets of landing a full-time position.

Next we show you how to safely use propane gas and finally, we stop off at Boatswain’s Beach to explore its animal adoption programme.

“Sustained employment is one of the key elements in people leading crime-free lives,” says Employment Development Outreach Coordinator Jean Solomon. This is why the RCIPS decided to host a one-day workshop for the public, aimed at helping jobseekers boost their confidence during interviews.

You will also find out how to maximize your employment potential through more effective methods of job searching, résumé and cover letter writing, developing interview skills, choosing appropriate attire and adopting suitable behaviour for the workplace.

Cook Smart! Safety First! This is the message from the Department of Planning, the Fire Services and Home Gas as they join forces to educate people on the safe use of propane gas at home.

See how to connect a propane tank and how to check for leaks, plus find out what else should be on your safety checklist.
Then it’s off to Boatswain’s Beach to see how everyone can contribute to securing our marine turtles’ future, simply by participating in the attraction’s adoption programme.

Hear how you can become a ‘proud parent’ of a turtle, bird, shark or even a crocodile. We talk to Terrestrial Exhibits & Education Programmes Curator Geddes Hislop on the privileges ‘parents’ receive and also discuss the difference your adoption will make.

Produced by Government Information Services, GIS Spotlight highlights government’s services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you. The weekly programme airs on Mondays at 6:30 pm on Cayman27, and again on Thursdays at 7:30 pm on Island24.

All the stories seen in this week’s edition can also be found on YouTube at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/user/CIGovtInfoServices. Comments and suggestions about the programme are always welcome. Viewers can provide feedback by e-mailing heather [dot] hopson [at] gov [dot] ky.

Finding a job

I attended the workshop and found that it was well organised, but no well recieved as attendance was far below expectations. Additional advertising would be appropriate possibly a car driving through the district after say 5:30pm announcing the workshop may have helpful. Also I taught that maybe the coordinators could have arranged to assist person who would like to work but maybe are not very literate a heping hand to fill out the paper work. Just offering a helping hand the those who need some help in filling out forms as it is a known fact that completely literate people for the most part dislike filling out forms so imagine a person that is limited in that area? Help them, make a greater impact on crime and help those who really can't help them selves who need you help the most.
