During an orientation seminar yesterday (Tuesday, 24 August), Education Minister, the Hon. Rolston Anglin, JP, welcomed 45 new teachers -- seven of whom are Caymanian -- to the government education service.
“Each of you has been carefully selected and entrusted with educating our future leaders and citizens,” he said. “We are indeed excited to have you join our team. Our expectations are high.”
Noting the goal of excellence in education for the 2010-2011 school year, he encouraged all to give of their best. “Many of our children lack sunshine in their lives. But if excellence is a part of your approach then you can become the ray of hope that is vital to uplift and help them succeed.”
Assuring the teachers that they had the Education Ministry and Department’s support, he challenged them to be part of the education system’s ongoing development. Noting that there will be many opportunities for them to share their experience and expertise, he encouraged them to forward their ideas and recommendations via the Principal’s Consultative Council. He also urged veteran teachers to help their new colleagues develop and grow.
Later Minister Anglin congratulated and gave special recognition to the newly- qualified Caymanian teachers. Arek Nicholson, Brittiney Ebanks and Eldon Parchmon will respectively teach music, math and social studies at John Gray High School. Sharice McLean will teach math at Clifton Hunter High and Carla Ebanks will join the East End Primary School team.
On the Brac, Kasandra Scott is slated to teach music at Cayman Brac High and Ricardo McLean will teach at the Creek and Spot Bay Infant School.
Also attending and making presentations at yesterday’s seminar were Ministry Chief Officer Mary Rodrigues and Chief Education Officer Shirley Wahler.
