Celebrating Literacy

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader” is the theme for this year’s Literacy Week, which begins today, Tuesday, 26, continuing through Friday, 29 January.

Schools across all three islands have planned a wealth of activities to celebrate the week. Below is the schedule of events.

PROSPECT PRIMARY:
• Tuesday 26th - 8.30 a.m. School assembly, literacy theme
• Wednesday 27th - 6.30. p.m. Bedtime Story Time
• Thursday 28th - Rotary Read Aloud
• Friday 29th - Book Fair and Literacy Character Day

RED BAY PRIMARY:
• Tuesday 26th – All in Together featuring author Jackie French
• Wednesday 27th – Literacy and Parents Day (book swap-shop open all day)
• Thursday 28th – Literacy Costume Parade (with visiting authors Twyla Vargas & Nazaria Suckoo)
• Friday 29th – Hooray for Reading Day!

JOHN A. CUMBER PRIMARY:
• Tuesday 26th – 8:30 a.m. Reading with the Stars (with Donna Bush and Jason Harper from CITN)
• Friday 29th – 8:45 – 10:15 a.m. Celebration of Learning

BODDEN TOWN PRIMARY
• Tuesday 26th - 6:30-7:30 p.m. Cuddle and Read
• Tuesday – Friday – daily Stop! Drop and Read after lunch break
• Thursday 28th – Rotary Read Aloud
• Friday 29th – Students attend school dressed as their favourite characters

NORTHSIDE
• Tuesday 26th - Classroom literacy activities
• Wednesday 27th
o 9:00 -10 a.m. – Buddy reading
o 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. – Classroom literacy activities
o 11:30-12:00 noon – Folk tales told by North Side Public Librarian Mrs. Whittaker
o 1:00-2:00p.m. – Compound-word Competition
o 2:00-3:00p.m. – MLA Ezzard Miller will read to students
• Thursday 28th – Book Character Day
• Friday 29th Be Active Assembly – Healthy Words
o Bookmobile on site

WEST END PRIMARY
• Thursday 28th – 7:00p.m. Literacy Night
• Throughout the week Rotary Club members and other community leaders will visit the school to read with students.

CREEK & SPOTT BAY PRIMARY
Ongoing activities throughout the week:
• Celebrity Readers: community leaders will visit to read with students
• Stop! Drop and Read
• Thursday 28th – Book Swap: students exchange books they’ve already read
• Friday 29th – Literacy Day (special events for juniors and infants)
o Reading treasure hunt and games
o Literacy and Technology
o Dramatization, retelling and illustration of fairy tales and nursery rhymes

LITTLE CAYMAN EDUCATION SERVICE

• Special Readers – Parents and community leaders will visit to read with students
• Author’s Chair – Parents are invited to view displays of students’ original stories; students will also read some of their stories to their parents.
