For many college students, summer is synonymous with internships and with a double major in sport management and marketing there was no doubt that Tyrell Cuffy would be a perfect fit for the Department of Sports.
“Tyrell has energy and determination, and will certainly add to our department’s efforts to encourage sports participation. Moreover as a young person he is very much in touch with our biggest target group – the youth,” said Acting Director of Sports Collin Anglin. And he has already been put to work, creating a multi-media campaign to promote the benefits of sports, added Mr. Anglin.
“I’m excited at this opportunity to test my academic knowledge. We hope that this campaign will inspire everyone – young and old – to play sports, to make it part of their lives,” Tyrell explained.
Himself an accomplished athlete, Tyrell is no stranger to the benefits of sports. His abilities as a sprinter has earned him a scholarship at Kings College in Tennesee where he holds the college record in the 200m sprint.
Most recently Tyrell won silver in the 200m sprint at the Miami Classics, which took place at the Miami Dade College this month. For the rest of this summer he will also compete in the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) U23 Games in Miramar, Florida (7 – 14 July) and the 21st Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (22 – 27 July). If his studies allow, Tyrell also hope to make it to this October’s Commonwealth Games in India.
“Juggling training and full-time study is not always easy, but it has definitely strengthened my character as it taught me to persevere – a lesson I apply to all areas of my life,” Tyrell said.
