Getting into the holiday spirit.

As a guide to employers and employees, the Department of Employment Relations has issued the following clarification on the coming public holidays this Christmas and New Year.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be observed on Monday, 26 December and Tuesday, 27 December. Any employee who works on any of these days shall be paid double time for hours worked. Employees who do not work on these days shall be paid normal wages.

This however, means that Sunday, 25 December 2011 is NOT considered to be a public holiday and is therefore a normal work day.

Similarly, as New Year’s Day is being observed on Monday, 2 January 2012, 1 January 2012 is NOT considered to be a public holiday and is therefore a normal workday. However, any employee who works on 2 January shall be paid double time for hours worked. Employees who do not work on this day shall be paid normal wages.
