A poster celebrating the contribution of women to the Cayman Islands was unveiled on Tuesday (8 March) to mark the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day. The unveiling took place at the Westin Casuarina Resort.

Tag lined “History...is her story too” the poster depicts 100 females spanning several generations, almost all of whom have contributed to Cayman’s growth and development.

Shot on location at Pedro St. James, the poster was commissioned by the Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing, and produced by GIS Marketing and Communications.

Ministry Senior Policy Advisor for Gender Affairs Tammy Ebanks explained that the ministry wanted to celebrate girls’ and women’s achievements to date and women who have given of themselves towards building the country.

“ The diverse cross-section of women and girls, some well known and others who work quietly behind the scenes, commemorates the fact that their contributions to home, community and country are invaluable. The poster is also a way of restating our commitment to empower the younger generation who will come after us,” she said.

At Tuesday’s unveiling, Minister of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing, the Hon. Mike Adam, MBE commented: “Special thanks go to all the remarkable women and girls who participated in creating this poster to celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day.

“Whether you are a Caymanian woman who broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first female in your field, or you are an expatriate who went above and beyond in contributing in your area of expertise, your involvement in nation-building is invaluable and is not forgotten on this day.”

Among the women pictured in the poster are National Hero the Hon. Sybil McLaughlin, MBE, JP; Deputy Premier and Minister of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, JP; Speaker of the Legislative Assembly the Hon. Mary Lawrence, MBE, JP; Information Commissioner Jennifer Dilbert, MBE, JP, Chief Magistrate Margaret Ramsay-Hale, Georgette Hurlston-Ebanks, signatory of the 1948 letter petitioning women’s right to vote, and 102 year old musician, Julia Hydes.
