This week on GIS Spotlight: fun with reading and inspiration from conquering disabilities.

This week (Monday, 28 November) GIS Spotlight transports you to the magical realm of children’s books, and proves that, even with disabilities, there is no holding back.

Share in the excitement that this year’s Literacy Week generated in Grand Cayman’s schools. Hear a visiting poet interact with children and learn from some enthusiastic, young, readers what kinds of books grab their fancy. Understand why books matter. See how teachers and parents joined hands for the event to motivate and energise students to continue reading throughout the rest of the year.

Next, be inspired by the persons in our community who do not let their disabilities hold them back. First, we visit a wheelchair-bound young man whose family has adapted their home so that he can participate in family activities. See how simple techniques like this can greatly enhance the lives of persons with disabilities.

We will also meet two persons whose indomitable spirit has allowed them to overcome physical challenges. A forklift operator who lost an entire arm in the workplace is now back at work and coaches children baseball, serving the community more than ever before. Meanwhile, a full-time employee and mother of two energetic young boys lives with the debilitating auto-immune disease multiple sclerosis (MS) but still finds time to host a helpful website for other MS sufferers.

Finally, learn what Government has underway to ensure the rights of the disabled are not trampled.
Produced by Government Information Services, GIS Spotlight highlights government’s services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you.

The weekly programme now airs on Cayman27 at 8:30 p.m. on Mondays, and 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays. All stories seen in this week’s show can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky. Comments and suggestions about the programme are always welcome. Viewers can provide feedback by e-mailing Spotlight [at] gov [dot] ky.
