There will be plant, food and local art and craft on display.

After a one-year absence following Hurricane Paloma’s devastation of the Sister Islands, the annual Sister Islands Agricultural Show makes a comeback this Saturday, 6 March, at the Agriculture Grounds on the Bluff, Cayman Brac.

“The fact that we are having the first show so soon after Paloma hit in 2008 demonstrates our resilience as a people,” said the Minister of District Administration, Works and Gender Affairs, the Hon. Juliana O’Connor –Connolly, JP. “I commend the farmers, the planning committee, participants, sponsors and others who have put tremendous effort into this year’s show.”

Deputy District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts said the Sister Islands’ show, which is in its seventh staging, will include activities for the entire family.

“The gates open at 8:00 a.m. with a traditional Caymanian breakfast, followed by the official opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m.,” he outlined. “The opening includes a flag raising, and remarks by His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE; the Premier, the Hon. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP; Deputy Premier Mrs. O’Connor-Connolly; District Commissioner Ernie Scott, JP; and Department of Agriculture Head Adrian Estwick.”

He further noted that that there will be as usual livestock and crop displays, adding that plants, food and local art and craft will also be on sale. Entertainment will include dances by local group La Femme, as well as Indian and quadrille dancing; and performances by the Cayman Brac High School Steel Band, Swanky Kitchen Band, and the North Side Kitchen Band, Mr. Tibbetts added.

Demonstrations and competitions by Customs’ K-9 Unit; Fire Department; Health Services; the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service; and Immigration are also scheduled. A highlight of the day will be the selection of the Agriculture King and Queen, and the Prince and Princess; along with the raffle draw of US$2,500.
